Knowing the Truth
My friend in the Lord, this is to inform you that your creator wants you to know, accept and practice the truth. In John Gospel chapter 18 verses 37c and 38, the Bibles states:- Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth?
In this passage, Pilate merely asked a question about the truth, but he did not want to know what the truth is. It is unfortunate that Pilate in all his splendor and acclaimed power never knew the truth is. Just like many leaders of our time, Pilate presided over the affairs of many and delivered judgment for and against many, but he never knew the truth. What a calamity? When leaders led without the truth, what we can expect and experience are oppression of the weak, suppression of the truth, corruption in high places, immorality, and other forms of lawlessness. That was the situation in Pilate’s time, and he was helped by the religious leaders of those days to suppress the truth just like what is happening in our country today.
The Bible did not tell us whether Pilate was able to obtain answer to his question. Of course it is obvious that he did not genuinely want to do so. If he wanted to know the truth, he would not have condemned Jesus to death in a haste. He had earlier testified that he found no fault in Jesus. Then what forced him to condemn Jesus to death? Indeed, it is hard to believe that a Judge at the level of a Governor of a sovereign state could yield to the demand of his subject to commit such folly just for the mere fact that he wanted to
protect his seat as a Governor. Remember that earlier, his wife had warned that he should not do anything wrong to Jesus. If Pilate wanted to know the truth from Jesus, he would not have heeded to the voice of the people. He would have equally known that all power belong to God, and that it is only God that put and sustain person in any position.
Today, this simple question – what is the truth? has continued to hunt the whole world. For ages, most people have failed to accept the obvious answer given by Jesus in John 14: 6 “I am the way, the truth and the life”. The importance of this question and its answer has been further emphasized by Jesus in John 8: 32 “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The knowledge of the truth is as important as the life we are living. Ability to know the truth is the necessity for walking in the light. Those that walk in the light, the Bible confirmed, cannot stumble; only those who walk in the night do stumble (John 11: 9-10). Walking in the light is walking in the truth. Jesus is the truth. He knows who we are and cannot tell us otherwise of what we are not. We may tell lies about ourselves – our names, our age, our jobs, our marital status, our locations, our qualifications, indeed about everything concerning us. We can even manipulate our census figure, other national data and indices to represent what we want. However, God knows our frame that we are mere dust (Psalm 103: 14). Likewise we cannot tell him anything about ourselves rather than what he knows us to be.
The burden is on us to accept who we are and to approach Jesus – the all knowing God and ask him to make us what we should be. I do not know your relationship with Him (Jesus) now. He is always ready to accept us if we are willing to give our lives to him. If you decide now to know him as the truth, he simple accepts you and give you power to be his friend and you can start to have a personal relationship with him (John 1:12). This is possible and it is very easy.
The Truth you Must Know
You must know that:-
- Jesus is the son of God – Luke 1: 35; Matthew 14: 33; 27: 54; Luke 4: 41; John 3: 18; 5: 25; 20: 31; Hebrews 4: 14; Acts 8: 37; 1 John 5: 5 & Revelation 2: 18.
- Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, John 14: 6
- All have sinned and come short of God’s glory and blessing – Romans 3: 23
- Jesus died to set you free from sin and death – Romans 6: 18 & 22
- It is only by believing and accepting Jesus that you can have access to eternal life – John 3: 16, 36; Acts 13: 48; 1 John 5: 13 & John 17: 3.
These are some of the fundamental truth that you must know. The knowledge of these basic truths will:-
- Lead you to God – Isaiah 51: 1; 1 Timothy 6: 11; 1 Kings 18: 21; Psalm 31: 14; 2 Chronicles 14: 11; Romans 3: 4; Isaiah 45: 22 & Revelation 21: 7
- Grant you peace with God – Romans 5: 1

- Grant you eternal rest and joy in the world to come – Matthew 11: 28-29; Isaiah 35: 10; 51: 11 & 61: 7.
What then can you do to know this truth? Accept Jesus into your life. Call upon him in prayer, for the Bible says that those that call upon the name of God shall be saved (Romans 10: 13; 1 Corinthians 1: 2). Study God’s word (John 5: 39, 2 Timothy 2: 15), accept, believe and practice the word by keeping God’s commandments. Associate with a Bible believing Church in your area. By so doing you will demonstrate that you know the truth. May God grant unto you the enabling grace to know the truth and practice the truth. Please pray this simple prayer: God I thank you for helping me to know the truth. Grant me grace to practice the truth in Jesus name – amen.
